Personality: Kalani has a no-nonsense, take-action personality, hating to sit and do nothing. She constantly looks for ways to improve herself and the world around her (sometimes overstressing or exhausting herself as a result). She still quite often dresses in a slightly eccentric, Gothic style, but for fun rather than to make any kind of statement - she is, on the whole, a pretty optimistic person nowadays. Because of her workaholic attitude, she has few close friends. As noted above, she has no patience whatsoever with people who have a self-centred or why-bother attitude to life.

Current History: Kalani is of mixed Japanese and Hawaiian-American heritage, and grew up in Honolulu. She had a happy childhood with a loving, well-adjusted family, but unfortunately this didn't prevent her from going through an extremely self-pitying drama queen phase in her early teens. Convinced that she was downtrodden and the most unfortunate person on Earth (despite the lack of evidence for this) and depressed by the apparent imperfection of the world around her, she began writing angsty poetry, sulking constantly and immersing herself in some of the more self-important parts of the so-called Gothic 'subculture'.
When she found her transformation ring (aged fourteen) and learned of her powers, Kalani was delighted to have her image of herself as 'special' and 'different' confirmed. She used her powers of invisibility and scrying to spy on her classmates and others, and occasionally even used her more deadly powers to intimidate people (fortunately without ever being caught). Ironically, it was through her spying that she began to change; in observing the private problems of other people, she finally began to see her own life in perspective. When she went to the aid of a classmate being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, she realized she could make a difference to the world instead of whining about its inadequacies. Renouncing her former self-absorbed personality, she set about fighting crime and injustice in her home city whenever and wherever she could. This culminated in her tangling with a group of religious cultists who were dabbling in dangerous occult practices to aid in their criminal activities.
Kalani graduated from high school with distinction, and successfully applied to study at Tokyo University (see below).

Senshi Profile

 Senshi Name: Sailor Argus
Realm of Influence: Darkness/Void
Colours: Black and silver
Outfit: Sailor Argus' uniform is similar in design to those of the Senshi of the other nine planets, but predominantly black rather than white, and with a vaguely Victorian-Gothic style. The bodice, skirt and collar have silver embroidery on their hems, and the bows are replaced by white lace ruffles. The back ribbons are very long (trailing to the ground), with silver writing embroidered on them. Her tiara is silver and set with a diamond, as is her choker, and her ornate black lace gloves go up past her elbows. She wears several layers of black and white lace petticoats under her skirt, much to the disappointment of more perverted Senshi-watchers, and patterned black lace tights that match her gloves, and knee-length boots with silver trim.

Transformation Item: A silver ring set with a rare blue diamond, which caused no end of trouble when Kalani was younger, as she had to conceal such an expensive-looking item carefully, both to prevent awkward questions and to avoid theft.
Transformation Phrase: "Argus Planet Power, Make Up!"
Transformation Sequence: The gem on her ring turns black, and her regular clothing dissolves into motes of black energy resembling a flock of ravens, which fly around her as her Senshi uniform and bracelet materialize.

Fighting Style: Sailor Argus uses an economical style of fighting, taking down weaker opponents in hand-to-hand combat to conserve her attacks for when they are really needed. If cornered or seriously outnumbered, she uses Void Spectre to disappear and/or escape. She uses the same power to spy out enemy dispositions before attacking if possible.
Strengths: Skilled in hand-to-hand fighting, using a mixture of present-day aikido and similar Silver Millenium martial arts. An excellent scout and ambusher, thanks to her power to turn invisible and walk through solid objects and the scrying ability of the Eye.
Weaknesses: Her attacks lack the sheer annihilating punch available to more powerful Senshi like Sailor Moon or Sailor Saturn, although Starlight Inversion is more accurate at making pinpoint strikes. She therefore cannot fight the most powerful monsters and enemies without assistance.
Weapons: None.
Other Items: The Eye of Argus, a fist-sized, roughly lens-shaped diamond with several hundred facets, set in a silver band worn on her arm. The Eye can be used to project observation data from the Silver Millenium watchstations in the outer solar system (see below) by selecting a different facet for each one. It can also be used to observe other places within a fairly short range (a hundred miles or so).

Name of Attack: Void Enclosure
--What it looks like: A sphere of utter darkness, radiating intense cold, forms around the target(s).
--Damage or Effect: Heat is rapidly sucked out of the target(s), with effects varying from minor discomfort and incapacitation through to a painful death depending on the time of exposure.
--Accuracy/Effectiveness: Appears rather than needing to be aimed, so it is highly accurate. Targets with sufficiently fast reactions and speed may be able to get out of the area of effect before becoming enclosed. As noted above, effectiveness varies with time of enclosure. Escape once encapsulated is difficult due to the intense cold and darkness, but feasible. More than a couple of seconds' enclosure will usually be fatal to a normal human - Sailor Argus is able to control the duration of the effect to incapacitate rather than kill.
Name of Attack: Void Spectre
--What it looks like: Sailor Argus fades rapidly from sight, becoming either invisible or a transparent, ghostly form.
--Damage or Effect: Sailor Argus is shifted slightly out of normal space. She can no longer touch, attack or otherwise affect anything solid, but on the plus side, can float through solid objects, become invisible (as noted above), and ignore gravity.
--Accuracy/Effectiveness: Most things will be unable to affect her while shifted, or detect her if she becomes invisible (although, as noted, she cannot attack them either). Telepathy and other attacks that affect the mind or soul of the target will probably still be effective. She can fly at normal walking or running speed.
Name of Attack: Argus Starlight Inversion
--What it looks like: Beams of light fall inward onto the Eye of Argus as Sailor Argus points her arm towards the target. A thin beam of darkness then shoots from the Eye along her arm.
--Damage or Effect: Matter freezes and crumbles where the beam touches. The beam can be sustained for several seconds (or longer if charged for a greater period of time), allowing it to be used as a cutting weapon.
--Accuracy/Effectiveness: The beam travels in a straight line like a laser, and is therefore very accurate as long as the user's aim is good.

Past History: Argus is arguably the solar system's tenth planet, existing in or beyond the Kuiper Belt (note: Argus is based on the recently discovered object in this region, which is larger than Pluto and currently known only as 2003UB13 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_UB313 . Its name is derived from the hundred-eyed mythical beast Argus). Its highly elliptical orbit means its distance from the Sun can vary from 35 to 97 astronomical units, one astronomical unit being the distance from the Sun to the Earth - approximately 93 million miles.
Argus was the site of the Silver Millenium civilization's most distant permanently inhabited outpost, the lynchpin of the Solar System's outer defences against invaders from interstellar space. A large number of watchstations and fortresses, controlled from Argus, were established on other bodies in the Kuiper Belt, giving rise to the legend of Argus' hundred eyes. A few automated listening posts were even established on comets and allowed to travel even further outsystem into the Oort Cloud. The settlement on Argus was essentially a garrison city, with every member of the population receiving military training almost from birth. The planet's culture revolved around its' people's sacred duty to guard the Solar System from external threats. The warriors of Argus' training emphasized stealth, speed and information-gathering, since they were too few to destroy a serious invasion force by themselves. Their task in such a case was to harass and delay the enemy while relaying information to the forces of the main planets.
Princess Ianthe, the last Senshi of Argus, was born on the planet and brought up in its traditions even before her powers awakened, becoming a well-respected leader of its people. Unfortunately, as it turned out the greatest threat to the Moon Kingdom came from within the solar system, not outside it. The inhabitants of Argus had barely learned of Queen Beryl's attack before it was over and the kingdom was in ruins. As the off-Earth colonies rapidly died out or were abandoned due to the loss of the Silver Crystal's power, the warriors of Argus remained at their posts (their own colony being more self-sustaining than most, thanks to its extreme distance from the Moon), defending an almost empty solar system. Gradually, however, the population decreased as sustaining life became more and more difficult and people began to leave, braving the dangerous journey to Earth. Ultimately the last inhabitants starved, suffocated or died of old age still faithfully scanning interstellar space for danger, Sailor Argus among them. It is likely that the bones of Argus' warriors still lie on its surface.
Since the last Sailor Argus did not die in the attack on the Moon, Kalani is not a direct reincarnation via the Silver Crystal, instead she is an entirely new Sailor Argus. She therefore lacks the memories of her predecessor, although the Eye of Argus was able to impart a great deal of information about the Silver Millenium to her.
Mission: Kalani still uses the Eye occasionally to watch the borders of the Solar System, attempting to fulfil her inherited role. She hoped, on moving to Tokyo, to contact the other planetary Senshi and offer them her assistance, but was contacted by Neo-Queen Serenity soon after arriving and whisked through space and time to Marin City. Having been appointed one of the city's overseer Senshi by the Queen, she hopes to help as many of the new Senshi as possible by sharing her experience of dealing with newly acquired powers in less-than-ideal ways.
